Answers to Browser FAQ's

1. My homepage comes up ok but if I try going to www.whatever.com, it says the server can’t be found!  If you only have trouble getting to a specific page and all other sites seem to load fine for you, this would indicate a problem with that particular site. It could also be a typo in the web address.  Never worry about typing in the entire address as it appears in the location or address bar, for example, http://www.microsoft.com/.  Most typos occur in the first few characters:  http://  If you begin with the “www” at the beginning of the address, your browser will insert the rest as needed!  It is also possible, and far more common, that they are experiencing problems with the server that hosts the site or it may be a problem with the actual site, itself. The best solution for this problem is to wait it out until the site is fixed, as long as you are sure it is not a typo.  This is not something that anybody but the site owner’s can take care of. 2.  I keep getting an error that says “Illegal Operation”.  What does this mean?  An “Illegal Operation” occurs when you open a program and your Operating System (Windows 95, 98, or NT) has difficulty opening it properly.  It could be a problem with corrupt files in either the O/S or the program and about the only thing that you can do is re-install the program that is causing the problem.  You might also get this error when you are actively in an open program.  If this is the case, the same fix is called for.  Re-installing the program should take care of the problem.  Some people will prefer having a computer technician look at their system for them and help determine the problem.  This is also a good idea if you are not comfortable removing and re-installing software.
